Xu, male, 42 years old. Initial consultation on September 16, 1973. The patient has been experiencing alternating chills and fever for 22 days. During fever episodes, the body temperature rises to 39.5°C, and during chills, it drops to 37.8°C. Symptoms include anorexia and distending pain in both hypochondriac regions. Initially treated for malaria without improvement. Suspected of having "intestinal cold-damage disease," the patient was treated with chloramphenicol for one week, but the condition remained unchanged. Further suspected of having "pulmonary tuberculosis," anti-tuberculosis drugs were administered for one week, also without effect. Subsequent blood tests, chest X-rays, and liver function tests at a hospital revealed no abnormalities.

At the time of consultation, the patient presented with alternating chills and fever, a body temperature of 39°C, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, dizzy vision, distending pain in the chest and hypochondriac regions, silent anorexia, a red tongue with scant coating, and a wiry pulse. This was diagnosed as Shaoyang disease. The patient was prescribed Minor Bupleurum Decoction:
Bupleurum 12g, Skullcap Root 5g, Tangshen 5g, Pro Formula Pinellia 12g, Prepared Liquorice Root 5g, Fresh Ginger Rhizome 5g, Chinese Date 12 pieces
The patient was instructed to measure body temperature every 4 hours after taking the medication. The medication was taken at 14:00, and the body temperature was 39°C at 18:00 and 38°C at 22:00.

On September 17, during the follow-up consultation, the symptoms remained unchanged with a body temperature of 38°C. The patient was again prescribed Minor Bupleurum Decoction. The medication was taken at 12:00, and the body temperature was 38.5°C at 16:00, 38°C at 20:00, 38°C at 24:00, 37.5°C at 04:00 on the 18th, and 37°C at 08:00. Minor Bupleurum Decoction was continued. Subsequently, the body temperature did not rise again, and all symptoms resolved. The reduction in fever coincided with the hours of Yin, Mao, and Chen (3:00-9:00 AM).
