Previous treatments included Patchouli Healthy Qi Pills, Baoji Pills, Zhizhu Daozhi Decoction, as well as Western medicines such as terramycin, furazolidone, and intravenous gentamicin, but the diarrhea persisted.
Symptoms included diarrhea resembling water, occurring more than 10 times a day, anorexia, tired eyes, tearless crying, a crimson tongue without coating, and a wiry, thin, and rapid pulse. Examination showed normal blood count and stool without blood or mucus. The condition was diagnosed as dampness-heat diarrhea damaging yin. The treatment aimed to clear heat, remove dampness, nourish yin, and stop diarrhea, using Polyporus Decoction with added oyster shell:
Polyporus, Donkey-hide Gelatin (separately melted) 15g each, Poria, Alisma 12g each, Talc, oyster shell 20g each.
After one dose, the diarrhea reduced, and the tongue regained moisture. The prescription was continued with the addition of Ophiopogon Tuber 12g, Schisandra Fruit 3g, and heterophylly falsestarwort root 12g. After taking 3 doses, all symptoms were relieved. The treatment was then followed by Shenmai plus Four Gentlemen Decoction for recovery.
