This product is the fruit of the Cherokee Rose (Rosa laevigata Michx.), a plant of the Rosaceae family. The best quality fruits are those that are large, reddish-yellow in color, glossy, and free of thorns. It is mainly produced in the provinces of Guangdong, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, and Guizhou in China. The "gold" refers to the color of the Cherokee Rose Fruit. According to the Bencao Gangmu, the character "櫻" should be "罌," describing its seeds as resembling yellow poppy seeds.
