The stem and fruit contain solanine (i.e., Black Nightshade alkaloid solanine), with the fruit containing 0.3% to 0.7% and the stem containing 0.3%. The fruit skin also contains anthocyanins and their aglycones.
It has anti-tumor effects and exhibits significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
