bubble_chart Concept

Clear and copious urine refers to urine that is clear and abundant in volume. Zhubing Yuanhou Lun refers to it as "excessive urination."

Frequent urination refers to an increased frequency of urination, but the urine color can be clear or turbid, and the volume can be large or small, which is different from this condition, although the two conditions can often coexist. Clear and copious urine is also commonly seen in lower consumptive thirst disease, as it often occurs together with thirst. Please refer to the entry on thirst for more information.

bubble_chart Pattern Analysis

  1. Kidney Yang Deficiency︰Clear and frequent urination, accompanied by a pale complexion, listlessness, soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, cold limbs, timidity and lack of strength, a pale tongue with white coating, and a deep, slow, and weak pulse. Insufficient kidney yang leads to clear and frequent urination, which belongs to the yang deficiency pattern. It is caused by the deficiency of kidney yang, failure in storage, and loss of bladder control. Therefore, clear and frequent urination is accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, and cold limbs, all of which are signs of insufficient kidney yang. The treatment should focus on warming the kidneys and controlling urination. The recommended formulas are Urination-Reducing Pill combined with Right-Restoring Pill with modifications.
  2. Internal Abundance of Yin Cold︰Clear and profuse urine accompanied by fear of cold, cold limbs, abdominal cold pain relieved by warmth, loose stools, bland taste in the mouth without thirst, pale tongue with white coating, and deep wiry pulse. This syndrome is caused by the direct attack of cold pathogens, excessive pudendal coldness, failure of yang to warm, and dysfunction of qi transformation, leading to the inability to retain body fluids. Therefore, in addition to clear and profuse urine, there are manifestations of yin exuberance and internal cold, such as fear of cold, cold limbs, abdominal cold pain, and deep wiry pulse. The treatment should focus on warming the middle and dispelling cold, and the prescription is recommended to be modified from Middle-Regulating Pill.
SuwenZhizhenyao Da Lun says: "All thin, clear and watery discharge is ascribed to cold," indicating that clear and profuse urine mostly belongs to the cold pattern. However, the cold pattern needs to be further differentiated into deficiency and excess. Clear and profuse urine due to insufficient kidney yang belongs to the deficiency pattern, while clear and profuse urine due to excessive internal pudendal coldness belongs to the excess pattern.
