A disease in children caused by the influence of seasonal pathogens, phlegm obstructing the airway, and impaired lung qi. Clinically, it is characterized by distinct paroxysmal, spasmodic cough and a prolonged course. Due to its infectious nature, it is prone to cause epidemics, hence it is also known as "epidemic cough." Because of the state and continuity of the cough, it is also referred to as "egret cough," "whooping cough," or "seasonal epidemic whooping cough." Due to the distinctive crowing sound during coughing, similar to a hen's call after laying an egg, it is also called "chicken cough."
