Tympanites caused by parasites such as schistosomiasis in Chinese Taxillus Herb is referred to as "parasitic tympanites," also known as "tympanites," or simply "gu." Clinical manifestations include initial abdominal distension, masses under the ribs, followed by gradual increase in ascites, pale or sallow or dark complexion, muscle wasting, reduced appetite, and fatigue. The disease is caused by the accumulation of parasitic toxins internally, injury to the liver and spleen, stasis and cold in the meridians, and disruption of the normal flow of qi and turbidity.
