Huangdi asked: "Does the pulse change according to a person's living environment, activity, bravery, or timidity?" Qibo replied: "Indeed, all human emotions such as fear, anger, labor, and rest cause changes. Thus,

  • walking at night causes panting from the kidneys, and excessive qi harms the lungs.
  • Falling and fear cause panting from the liver, and excessive qi harms the spleen.
  • Fear and alarm cause panting from the lungs, and excessive qi harms the heart.
  • Crossing water and falling cause panting from the kidneys and bones. At such times, the brave will have their qi circulate and recover, while the timid will have it stagnate and lead to illness.
Therefore, it is said: The method of diagnosing illness involves observing a person's bravery or timidity, bones, flesh, and skin to understand their condition, and this is the diagnostic method.

Thus,

  • eating to fullness causes sweating from the stomach.
  • Fright and loss of essence cause sweating from the heart.
  • Carrying heavy loads and traveling far cause sweating from the kidneys.
  • Running fast and fear cause sweating from the liver.
  • Shaking the body and laborious work cause sweating from the spleen.
Therefore, in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, the four seasons of yin-yang, illness arises from overuse, and this is the norm.

Food qi enters the stomach, disperses essence to the liver, and excessive qi to the tendons. Food qi enters the stomach, turbid qi returns to the heart, excessive essence to the meridians, meridian qi flows through, meridian qi returns to the lungs, the lungs connect with all vessels, transport essence to the skin and hair, integrate essence and vessels, move qi to the organs, organ essence to mental activity, stays in the four zang organs, qi returns to balance, balance is achieved, the qi mouth forms an inch, and this determines life and death. Drinking enters the stomach, circulates essential qi, ascends to the spleen, spleen qi disperses essence, ascends to the lungs, dredges and regulates water passages, descends to the bladder. Water essence spreads to the four directions, the five meridians operate together, harmonizing with the four seasons and the five zang organs' yin-yang, and this is the norm.

  • When the Taiyang (EX-HN5) zang is dominant, there is reversal panting and deficient qi counterflow, indicating yin deficiency and yang excess. Both the exterior and interior should be drained, and the lower shu points should be used.
  • When the yangming zang is dominant, it indicates yang qi is overly concentrated. The yang should be drained and yin tonified, using the lower shu points.
  • When the shaoyang zang is dominant, it indicates reversal qi. The front of the foot suddenly becomes large, and the lower shu points should be used.
  • When the shaoyang is dominant, it is an excess of one yang.
  • When the taiyin zang pulses, one should carefully examine the true qi. The five meridian qi are deficient, stomach qi is unbalanced, and it is a triple yin condition. The lower shu points should be treated, tonifying yang and draining yin.
  • When one yang alone is roaring, shaoyang reversal occurs, yang concentrates in the upper body, the four meridians compete and expand, qi returns to the kidneys, and the meridians and collaterals should be treated, draining yang and tonifying yin.
  • When one yin arrives, jueyin is in control. True deficiency causes heart pain, reversal qi lingers and presses, leading to cold sweats. Adjust diet and harmonize medicine, treat the lower shu points.
  • Huangdi asked: "What is the manifestation of the Taiyang (EX-HN5) zang?" Qibo replied: "It manifests as triple yang and floats."
  • Huangdi asked: "What is the manifestation of the shaoyang zang?" Qibo replied: "It manifests as one yang. The one yang zang is slippery but not solid."
  • Huangdi asked: "What is the manifestation of the yangming zang?" Qibo replied: "It manifests as large and floating. The taiyin zang pulses, indicating deep and drum-like.
  • When the two yin pulse arrives, the kidney is deep and does not float."
