Wailing ST26

﹝Name Explanation﹞

Wai, outer side; Ling, bulge. The point is located beside the navel in the rectus abdominis muscle area, hence the name.

﹝Source﹞

Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing.

﹝Location﹞

Lower abdomen, 1 cun below the center of the navel (Yinjiao (CV7)) and 2 cun lateral, 1 cun below Tianshu (ST25).
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "Below Tianshu (ST25), above Daju (ST27)";
  • Suwen-Qifu Lun Wang Bing's note: "1 cun below Tianshu (ST25) in body cun";
  • Leijing Tuyi: "Opposite Yinjiao (CV7)".

﹝Regional Anatomy﹞

  • Muscle: Rectus abdominis and its sheath.
  • Nerve: Tenth intercostal nerve.
  • Blood vessels: Branches of the tenth intercostal artery and vein, and the inferior epigastric artery and vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Perpendicular insertion or oblique insertion 1～1.5 cun. In female sterilization acupuncture anesthesia, Wailing (ST26) can be selected, inserted to the fascia and then lifted, followed by a 15° angle subcutaneous penetrating needling towards the opposite lateral Wailing (ST26) 5～7 cun; Qichong (ST30) is similarly needled, then electroacupuncture is applied for 25～30 minutes before needle removal for surgery. Moxa cone moxibustion 5～7 cones, moxibustion with moxa stick 10～20 minutes.

﹝Effects﹞

Regulates the intestines, benefits qi.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Abdominal pain, hernia, menstrual pain, heart as if suspended, pulling navel abdominal pain.
  • Modern: Acupuncture anesthesia point for female sterilization.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • Female sterilization acupuncture anesthesia: Wailing (ST26), Qichong (ST30).
