﹝Alias﹞

Smooth Muscle, Smooth Youmen (KI21)

﹝Etymology﹞

Smooth Muscle refers to the rectus abdominis sheath; Gate, the entrance and exit, refers to the acupoint. The point is located at the rectus abdominis sheath, hence the name.

﹝Source﹞

Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing.

﹝Location﹞

Upper abdomen, 1 cun above the center of the umbilicus (Shuifen (CV9)) and 2 cun lateral, 1 cun above Tianshu (ST25).
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "1 cun below Taiyi (ST23)";
  • Leijing Tuyi: "Opposite Shuifen (CV9)".

﹝Regional Anatomy﹞

  • Muscle: Rectus abdominis and its sheath.
  • Nerve: Branches of the ninth intercostal nerve.
  • Vessel: Branches of the ninth intercostal artery and vein, and inferior epigastric artery and vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Perpendicular insertion or oblique insertion 0.5~1.5 cun. Moxa cone moxibustion 3~5 cones, moxibustion with moxa stick 10~15 minutes.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Stiff tongue, hematemesis, various stomach and intestinal diseases, prolapse of rectum, mania, epilepsy, vomiting, protruding tongue.
  • Modern: Abdominal pain, vomiting.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • Protruding tongue: Huaroumen (ST24), Shaohai (HT3), Wenliu (LI7).
