﹝Explanation of Name﹞

Ying, refers to the pulsating area of the artery.Huangdi Neijing Taisu Yang Shang-shan's note: "On both sides of the Adam's apple, the foot yangming meridian receives the qi of the five zang and six fu organs to nourish the human body, hence it is called Renying (ST9)."

﹝Category﹞

Intersecting point: Zhenjiu Dacheng: the meeting point of foot yangming and shaoyang.

﹝Source﹞

Lingshu-Benshu.

﹝Location﹞

Beside the Adam's apple on the neck, at the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, where the common carotid artery pulsates. 1.5 cun lateral to the Adam's apple.
  • Lingshu-Hanrebing: "In front of the infant's sinew";
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "On the neck, where the large artery pulsates and responds to touch, beside the Adam's apple";
  • Suwen-Yinyang Lei Lun Wang Bing's note: "On both sides of the Adam's apple... 1.5 cun";

﹝Local Anatomy﹞

  • Muscles: Platysma, posteriorly the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  • Nerves: Transverse cervical nerve, cervical branch of the facial nerve; deep layer contains the carotid sinus; deepest layer contains the sympathetic trunk, laterally the descending branch of the hypoglossal nerve and the vagus nerve.
  • Blood vessels: Deep layer contains the superior thyroid artery, approximately at the bifurcation of the internal and external carotid arteries; anterior jugular vein; externally the internal jugular vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Adopt a supine position, insert the needle slowly, perpendicular insertion 0.3～0.5 cun. Do not puncture the arteries or veins, do not retain the needle, avoid sitting position for acupuncture or excessive stimulation. Direct moxibustion is contraindicated.

﹝Effects﹞

Regulates qi, lowers rebellion.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Swelling of the throat, cough, chest fullness, wheezing, hyperthyroidism, scrofula, vomiting cholera, headache, high fever, delirious speech and hallucinations, swelling of the neck with qi stagnation, difficulty swallowing, tinnitus, lumbago, vomiting with phlegm.
  • Modern: Acute and chronic laryngitis, tonsillitis, hypertension, hypotension, goiter.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • Cholera, headache, chest pain, wheezing: Renying (ST9), Neiguan (PC6), Guanchong (TE1), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Lower Sanli.
  • Hypertension: Renying (ST9), Quchi (LI11), Zusanli (ST36).
