Zhibian BL54

﹝Name Explanation﹞

Zhi, order; Bian, edge. This point is located at the lowest edge of the second lateral line of the foot taiyang bladder meridian (BL) on the back, hence the name.

﹝Source﹞

Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing.

﹝Location﹞

On the buttock, 3 cun lateral to the median sacral crest, level with the 4th sacral foramen (Xialiao (BL34)) and below the 21st vertebra, in the greater sciatic foramen.
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "At the depression 3 cun lateral to the 21st vertebra below."

﹝Regional Anatomy﹞

  • Muscles: Gluteus maximus, inferior border of the piriformis muscle.
  • Nerves: Deep layer is the origin of the inferior gluteal nerve and posterior femoral cutaneous nerve, lateral to the sciatic nerve.
  • Vessels: Inferior gluteal artery and vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Perpendicular insertion 1~3 cun. Moxa cone moxibustion 3~7 cones, moxa stick warm moxibustion 10~15 minutes.

﹝Effects﹞

Strengthens the waist and legs, benefits the lower jiao.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Lumbago with inability to bend or stretch, heavy sacrum with inability to lift, vaginal pain, difficulty in urination and defecation, dark and astringent urine, enuresis, hemorrhoid swelling, pain in the crotch, seminal emission, leukorrhea.
  • Modern: Pain in the waist and legs, sciatica, lower limb paralysis, pelvic diseases.
