Qihaishu BL24

﹝Name Explanation﹞

Shu, connected to transport. The point is near the most concave part of the spine (the spinous process of the third lumbar vertebra), corresponding anteriorly to the abdominal Conception Vessel (CV) Qihai (CV6) point.

﹝Source﹞

Taiping Shenghui Fang.

﹝Location﹞

On the back, 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the third lumbar vertebra.
  • Taiping Shenghui Fang: "At the level of the 15th vertebra, 1.5 cun lateral to the spine."

﹝Local Anatomy﹞

  • Muscles: Between the thoracolumbar fascia, the longissimus muscle, and the iliocostalis muscle.
  • Nerves: Medial branch of the posterior ramus of the second lumbar nerve, deeper is the lateral branch of the posterior ramus, and the lumbar plexus.
  • Vessels: Medial branch of the dorsal branch of the third lumbar artery and vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Perpendicular insertion or downward oblique insertion 0.5～1.5 cun. Moxa cone moxibustion 3～5 cones, or moxa stick warming moxibustion for 10～15 minutes.

﹝Functions﹞

Regulates the lower jiao, strengthens the lower back and knees.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Lumbago, difficulty in leg and knee movement, hemorrhoids and fistulas, bloody diarrhea.
  • Modern: Menstrual irregularities, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, lower limb paralysis.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding: Shiqizhui (EX-B8), Qihaishu (BL24), Sanyinjiao (SP6).
