﹝Explanation of the Name﹞

The name "Yutang" refers to a noble place where the mind resides, symbolized by white jade. In ancient times, the main room of a house was often called "Tang," usually located on the central axis of the residential complex and inhabited by elders. This acupoint corresponds to the heart and is located above Zhongting (CV16), hence the name. Song YuFeng Fu: "Wandering in Zhongting (CV16), heading north to Yutang (CV18)."

﹝Location﹞

On the midline of the chest, level with the third intercostal space, at the midpoint of the sternum.
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "Located 1.6 cun below Zigong (CV19), in the depression."

﹝Local Anatomy﹞

  • Muscles: The superficial fascia is thin, with almost no fat.
  • Nerves: Medial branch of the anterior cutaneous branch of the third intercostal nerve.
  • Vessels: Anterior perforating branches of the internal thoracic (mammary) artery and vein.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Subcutaneous insertion 0.3~0.5 cun. Moxa cone moxibustion 3~5 cones, or warm moxibustion with moxa stick for 15~20 minutes.

﹝Effects﹞

Relieves chest fullness, reduces counterflow.

﹝Indications﹞

  • Classical: Chest fullness, asthma, chest and rib pain, vomiting, vexation, swelling and pain in both breasts, pharyngitis with throat swelling.
  • Modern: Bronchitis, pleurisy, costal chondritis.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • Vexation and vomiting: Yutang (CV18), Youmen (KI21).
  • Chest pain: Yutang (CV18), Ximen (PC4).
