﹝Explanation of Name﹞

Xiguan (LR7) There are depressions on both sides of the patella resembling eye sockets, and the point is located above them, hence named Xiyan (EX-LE5).

﹝Location﹞

With the knee bent, in the depressions on both sides of the patellar ligament, the one on the medial side is called Neixiyan (EX-LE4), and the one on the lateral side is called Waixiyan (EX-LE5).

﹝Regional Anatomy﹞

Located one fingerbreadth medial and lateral to the patellar ligament; there is a network of arteries and veins from the Xiguan (LR7) joint; superficially, there are branches of the saphenous nerve and the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, and deeply, there are branches of the common peroneal nerve.

﹝Acupuncture and Moxibustion﹞

Insert the needle 0.5 cun. A sore and distending sensation is felt locally. Moxibustion with 3 to 5 cones.

﹝Indications﹞

crane knee wind, scabies, leg pain, apoplexy, beriberi, Xiguan (LR7) joint inflammation.

﹝Prescription Examples﹞

  • crane knee wind: Xiyan (EX-LE5), Heding (EX-LE2), Yanglingquan (GB34).
  • Generalized scabies: Quchi (LI11), Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Juegu, Xiyan (EX-LE5).
