Bencao Yanyi: For elderly constipation of deficiency type, Platycladi Seed, large Hemp Seed, and pine nut kernel are ground together, dissolved in white wax, and made into pills the size of tung seeds. Take 20-30 pills with a little red lead decoction before meals. When I was an official in Shaanxi, I often climbed high and looked out, and even though there were thousands of trees, they all pointed west. This wood is extremely hard, not afraid of frost and snow, and possesses the healthy qi of wood, which other woods cannot match. Therefore, it is controlled by the healthy qi of metal, and thus all point towards it.

Tangye Bencao: It has a neutral qi, sweet and pungent taste, and is non-toxic.

《materia medica》 says: It is used to calm the five zang-organs, eliminate wind-dampness arthralgia, tonify qi and blood, promote longevity, make the skin moist and beautiful, improve hearing and vision, and is used to moisten the kidneys.

Yaoxing Lun says: Platycladi Seed is a monarch herb. It is incompatible with Chrysanthemum Flower and fears Japanese dock root. It can treat cold in the waist and kidneys, cold pus and stagnant water in the bladder, enhance male function, prolong life, eliminate head wind, treat various evil spirits, and treat infantile fright epilepsy. Platycladi Seed is used in the ancient formula Ten Elixirs Pill.

Bencao Gangmu: Platycladi Seed has a neutral nature, neither cold nor dry, a sweet taste that tonifies, and a pungent taste that moistens. Its qi is fragrant and can penetrate the heart and kidneys, benefit the spleen and stomach, and is suitable for use in nourishing formulas.

It nourishes heart qi, moistens kidney dryness, calms the soul and stabilizes the spirit, benefits intelligence and tranquilizes the mind. Its burnt extract can moisten hair and treat tinea.

Bencao Jingshu: The cypress receives the qi of autumn and metal, its texture is hard and its qi is extremely fragrant, so its seed has a sweet and neutral taste and is non-toxic. Zhen Quan adds pungency, which is also appropriate. It enters the foot Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians, as well as the hand Shaoyin meridian. It treats palpitations because the heart stores the spirit and the kidneys store essence and will. Deficiency in both the heart and kidneys causes palpitations. It enters the heart to nourish the spirit and the kidneys to stabilize the will. When the spirit and will are nourished and stabilized, the symptoms are naturally eliminated. Its fragrance is favored by the spleen and stomach, and its moistening properties are suitable for the liver and kidneys, so it can calm the five zang-organs. When the five zang-organs are calm, qi is naturally tonified. The ability to eliminate wind-dampness arthralgia is not something a moistening herb can do, so it must be the leaves that have this effect. Bielu treats mental confusion, which is the beginning of palpitations. Deficiency damage and multiple arthralgia with heavy pain in the waist are due to liver and kidney deficiency. Sweat is the fluid of the heart, and the heart governs blood. Benefiting yin and blood will cure all these symptoms.

The leaves: They have a bitter and slightly warm taste, and their nature should be slightly cold, so they are used to treat various blood disorders, menorrhagia, and red and white discharge. As for tonifying qi and making one resistant to cold and heat, this is similar to the nature of Platycladi Seed. The unique ability to promote muscle growth and eliminate fixed arthralgia is its special skill.

Contraindications: Platycladi Seed is oily in nature, so those with slippery intestines and diarrhea should not take it. Those with excessive phlegm in the diaphragm should not take it. Frequent erections, heat in the kidneys, and summerheat dampness causing diarrhea are all contraindications. Oily seeds should not be used in medicine.

Bencao Mengquan: Sweet and pungent in taste, neutral in qi. Non-toxic. Improves hearing and vision, dispels wind-cold-dampness impediment and relieves pain; tonifies qi and blood, eliminates confusion and deficiency, and stops sweating. Treats kidney cold, waist cold, and bladder cold with pus and stagnant water, moistens kidney dryness, body dryness, and facial dryness and dullness. Enhances yang energy, eliminates all evils, stops palpitations, and calms the five zang-organs. Can also be decocted and applied for head wind and dizziness pain.

"Materia Medica Chengya": All trees face the sun, but the cypress alone points west, accepting the control of metal to fulfill its function, thus achieving its steadfastness and longevity, hence the character is derived from 'white'. The trunk, branches, leaves, and seeds have different uses; the seeds embody the whole, containing intrinsic beauty, thus they enter the five organs. The leaves resemble the network of veins, hence they treat the weakness and collapse of the network and the failure of the veins to contain and overflow. The branches have twice the energy of the leaves, hence they enter the limbs and joints. The trunk has more vigorous energy than the branches, hence it governs the entire body. Shenghui Fang , uses the seeds to treat fright epilepsy and greenish-white stools, as the liver wood is controlled, anger then rides on the element being restricted, hence the greenish-white color appears in the stool, and the fright originates from the organs, nothing but the seeds are suitable.

The cypress is fragrant and noble, its patterns are dazzling, even if it grows straight up to the sky, who can stop it. Yet it bows westward, to bear the control of its heaven, it can be said to have supreme virtue. The giant among trees, serving as the pillar of the state, it is fitting that the Yin people used the cypress, did they foresee the westward inclination of later generations? Its taste is sweet, its nature is peaceful, it treats the loss of control of liver wood, which causes fright and palpitations, its substance is firm, its energy is smooth, it expels wind-dampness causing paralysis. Its virtue moistens the body, it calms the organs and delights in the way, the ears and eyes are clear, the complexion is long-lasting.

"Medicinal Property Explanation": Platycladi Seed, tastes sweet and pungent, nature is neutral, non-toxic, enters the lung, spleen, and kidney meridians. It calms the five zang organs, stabilizes fright and palpitations, supplements middle qi, eliminates wind-dampness, invigorates yang, warms the waist and knees, dispels head wind, wards off all evils, moistens the skin, brightens the ears and eyes. Platycladus, tastes bitter and astringent, nature is slightly cold, stops vomiting, nosebleeds, collapse, and dysentery, eliminates wind-cold fixed arthralgia, blackens the beard and hair, treats chilblains. Oyster shell and melon seeds are its assistants, fears Chrysanthemum Flower.

Note: Platycladi Seed's pungency returns to the lung, sweetness returns to the spleen, turbid yin returns to the kidney, hence it enters all. The bitterness and astringency of cypress leaves belong to metal and are good at guarding, they clear the blood aspect the most, being an important medicine for tonifying yin, young leaves must be used, collected from the east in spring, south in summer, west in autumn, north in winter, to obtain the seasonal vitality.

Jingyue Quanshu : Tastes sweet and neutral, nature is slightly cool, can moisten the heart and lungs, nourish the liver and spleen, moisten kidney dryness, calm the spirit and soul, benefit the will. Hence it can stabilize fright and severe palpitations, benefit yin qi, beautify the complexion, treat deficiency damage, benefit blood and stop sweating, moisten the large intestine, relieve constipation of deficiency type, also dispels all evils and ghosts, treats children's fright epilepsy. In summary, the fragrance is clear, the nature is mostly lubricating, although it is a good agent for nourishing yin and blood, if one wishes to cultivate the root, it is not the strength of clear products.

Bencao Beiyao : Supplements the heart and spleen, moistens the liver and kidney.

Pungent, sweet, and moist. Its fragrance is clear, can penetrate the heart and kidney and please the spleen, Ang notes: Most spleen-tonifying medicines are dry, this moist medicine with fragrance can relax the spleen, using it in dry spleen medicines is most beneficial. Nourishes heart qi, dispels kidney dryness, assists the spleen and nourishes the liver. Haogu says: Liver meridian qi aspect medicine. Benefits wisdom and calms the spirit, nourishes the heart. Clears ears and improves vision, sweet benefits blood, fragrance relieves stuffy orifices. Benefits blood and stops sweating. The heart generates blood, sweat is the fluid of the heart. Eliminates wind-dampness, cures fright epilepsy, moistens the skin, wards off ghosts.

Benjing Fengyuan : Platycladi Seed's nature is neutral and tonifying, tastes sweet and pungent, its fragrance is clear, can connect the heart and kidney, benefit the spleen and stomach, suitable for use in nourishing agents. Benjing says it eliminates wind-dampness paralysis, because of its dry nature. Bielu treats confusion, and multiple arthralgia with heavy pain in the waist, which is Benjing main treatment for fright and palpitations, eliminates wind-dampness paralysis. "Jing Shu" considers the function of eliminating wind-dampness paralysis not something a moist medicine can do, it should be the ability of the leaves. Who would have thought that although its substance is moist, its nature is dry, there is no fragrant medicine whose nature is not dry. Haogu considers it a liver meridian qi aspect medicine, Shizhen says it nourishes heart qi, moistens kidney dryness, calms the soul and stabilizes the spirit, benefits wisdom and calms the spirit, which is Benjing calming the five zang organs. Formerly people thought it was too oily and slippery, those with much phlegm and diarrhea should avoid it. They did not know its dry nature, and it does not harm the middle or stick to phlegm. Long-term use often leads to dryness and accumulation in the stool, because the fragrance moves qi, and it does not benefit blood.

Bencao Chongyuan : Cypress leaves do not wither in winter, they receive the water qi of taiyang. The seeds are yellow and fragrant, they receive the earth qi of taiyang. The essence of water nourishes above, hence it treats the fright and palpitations of non-interaction between heart and kidney. The earth qi fills within, hence it tonifies qi and eliminates wind-dampness. Treating fright and palpitations, tonifying qi, eliminating wind-dampness, then the five zang organs are all harmonized, hence it calms the five zang organs.

Bencao Qiuzhen : [Note] Nourishes heart blood.

Platycladi Seed specifically enters the heart. It is pungent, sweet, neutral, and moistening. Although various texts claim that it nourishes all four organs, in reality, it primarily acts as a heart medicine. Its fragrance, while capable of tonifying the spleen, actually helps relieve stuffy orifices and enters the heart. Its moistening property, while beneficial for the liver and kidneys, actually calms the spirit and stabilizes the mind. Its sweetness, while sufficient to harmonize the stomach and strengthen the middle, actually enriches the blood and stabilizes the spirit. Therefore, it can dispel wind-dampness, treat fright epilepsy, ward off evil spirits, and nourish the skin, resulting in a serene spirit, clear senses, and the absence of dryness and blockage. However, its nature is highly lubricating, and all seeds are moistening. It is strictly contraindicated for those with pudendal coldness and diarrhea. Its fragrant and dispersing nature also makes it unsuitable for those with weak constitutions or excessive internal heat. As for claims of preventing hunger, aging, and prolonging life, although they are found in classical texts, they should be interpreted flexibly and not taken too literally.

Depei Bencao: Pungent, neutral, slightly cool. Enters the hand Shaoyin and foot Jueyin meridians, qi aspect. Calms the five zang-organs, soothes the spirit. Eliminates ghost intercourse, stabilizes fright palpitations, benefits constipation of deficiency type, treats fright epilepsy.

With a small amount of Milkwort Root, it raises kidney qi to connect with the heart. Combined with pine nut and Hemp Seed, it treats elderly constipation of deficiency type.

Contraindicated in cases of excessive phlegm, lung qi floating upward, efflux diarrhea, and stomach deficiency with a tendency to vomit.

Bencao Jing Jie: The qi of cypress kernel is neutral, inheriting the metal qi of autumn, entering the hand Taiyin lung meridian; its flavor is sweet and non-toxic, acquiring the earth flavor of centrality, entering the foot Taiyin spleen meridian; being a kernel, it also enters the hand Shaoyin heart meridian. The qi rises and the flavor harmonizes, it is yang in nature.

The spirit resides in the heart, and when the spirit is not calm, it causes fright palpitations. Cypress kernel enters the heart, thus treating fright palpitations.

Tonifying qi: its neutral qi benefits lung qi, its sweet flavor benefits spleen qi, its moistening nature benefits heart qi. To treat wind, first treat blood; when blood circulates, wind naturally ceases. Cypress kernel's sweet flavor benefits the spleen and stomach, blood circulates and wind naturally subsides, and the spleen's healthy transportation causes dampness to be expelled. The Taiyin is the damp earth meridian, the five zang-organs store yin, the spleen is the source of yin qi, the heart is the organ that generates blood, the lung is the organ of body fluids. Cypress kernel, being neutral and sweet, benefits yin; when yin is sufficient, the five zang-organs are all calm.

Shennong Bencao Jingdu: Xu Ling-tai said, "Cypress is born with the firm and strong nature of heaven and earth, it does not change with external conditions, it becomes even greener in winter, thus it can calm the heart spirit and gather heart qi, and is not invaded by pathogenic qi or wandering fire."

The physiological principle of humans is called ren (benevolence), which is stored in the heart. The vitality of things lies in their seeds, thus seeds are also called ren. The kernels of all plants can nourish the vital qi, corresponding by analogy.

Shennong Bencao Jing Bai Zhong Lu: Cypress seed, flavor sweet, neutral. Treats fright palpitations, clears wandering fire from the fire meridian. Calms the five zang-organs, has a moistening effect. Tonifies qi, strong fire consumes qi, when fire is calm, qi is benefited. Eliminates wind-dampness impediment. Receives the command of autumn metal, can dry dampness and pacify the liver. Long-term use makes the skin moist and beautiful, sharpens hearing and vision, moistens the skin and all orifices. Prevents hunger and aging, lightens the body and prolongs life. The nature of cypress does not require irrigation to achieve longevity.

Benjing Shuzheng: All trees tend to grow towards the sun, but the cypress alone points westward, indicating a union of wood energy and metal energy. Wood and metal represent the beginning and end of creation. Wood embodies the vitality of spring, while metal embodies the maturity of autumn. In humans, the liver and lungs correspond to these energies. When the liver harmonizes with the lungs, yin is generated, and the source of blood transformation becomes abundant. As yin descends, yang follows, signifying that the descent of metal is endless, and thus the ascent of wood is also endless. When the lungs harmonize with the liver, yang is generated, and the source of qi transformation becomes abundant. As yang ascends, yin follows, signifying that the ascent of wood is endless, and thus the descent of metal is also endless. If the ascent and descent are limited, it is due to a lack of harmony in transformation. The cypress, as a plant, transforms at midnight, and yin is generated through this transformation. As yin descends naturally, yang follows naturally. Its function differs from the direct suppression of bitter-cold herbs, which is why it can treat blood-related conditions in Nishun. However, its fruit and leaves have different primary effects. Why is this? The leaves, which remain unchanged throughout the four seasons, represent wood that has already transformed into metal, embodying a contracting and descending energy. Thus, they taste bitter and have a drying nature. The fruit, which blooms in spring and matures in autumn, though it also carries a strong metal energy, retains the vitality of wood. It harmonizes with metal but has not fully transformed into it, embodying a peaceful energy. Thus, it tastes sweet and has a moistening nature. Bitter and drying properties resemble fire, while sweet and moistening properties resemble water. Sweet moistening is nurtured within bitter drying, signifying that blood originates from water but is formed through fire. Blood originates from water and is formed through fire, relying on metal to function. Only when it cannot harmonize with metal can metal harmonize with fire, allowing the true water's essence to transform through stimulation. Thus, no other herb surpasses the cypress in nourishing heart blood. This is what Bielu refers to as benefiting blood, and the functions of calming fright, palpitations, and stabilizing the five zang-organs as described in Benjing are all attributed to it. Why does it also tonify qi? Because the heart is associated with fire. When the blood within is nourished, the qi outside naturally becomes abundant. When heart qi fills the lungs, it can connect with the heart vessels and regulate breathing. This is what is meant by tonifying qi. When the liver harmonizes with the lungs, heart blood is generated. The liver then aligns with the yin of the lungs, transporting blood to the Blood Sea. When the lungs harmonize with the heart, heart qi flows smoothly. The lungs then align with the yang of the heart, returning to the life gate. Thus, the cypress fruit seems to fully grasp the mechanisms of postnatal qi and blood transformation. This is what Bielu refers to as treating dizziness, deficiency, labored breathing, and heavy pain in the waist.

The Yin Fu Jing states that the control of birds lies in their qi. Observing how a magnet attracts a needle and how cypress trees point westward, it is evident that their qi is naturally inclined, beyond the strength of human effort. Reflecting on this, it is said that the magnet is the mother of iron, so does the westward-pointing cypress not resemble a child facing its mother? The west is associated with the metal element, and in the human body, the lungs, which govern the distribution of qi and regulate the meridians, belong to metal. When blood follows the meridians, it does not overflow, causing symptoms like hematemesis, nosebleeds, or dysentery. The use of cypress leaves to treat hematemesis, nosebleeds, and bloody stools aims to regulate blood under the control of the lungs, distributing it through the meridians to prevent overflow. In the *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, the mention of "hematemesis not ceasing" in the context of Arborvitae Leaf Decoction highlights the failure of blood to follow the meridians. However, symptoms like restlessness, panting, and upward-flaring fire toward the heart and lungs are treated with Bamboo Skin Bolus, which is used for postpartum women experiencing deficiency, restlessness, and vomiting. This formula includes cypress seeds, which grow among cypress leaves. How is it that cypress leaves direct blood westward, while cypress seeds restrain qi from moving westward? There is a reason for this. The relationship between seeds and leaves is like that between leaves and the west, and the relationship between qi and blood is akin to that between leaves and seeds. Let us use humans as an analogy. A person's orientation toward their mother is constant, but once they have children, their attention becomes divided. Cypress seeds start green and gradually turn golden, symbolizing the union of wood (liver) and metal (lungs). Qi and blood also transform and generate each other. Postpartum women experiencing deficiency, restlessness, and vomiting suffer from blood deficiency and chaotic qi, which affects the heart (causing restlessness) and the lungs (causing panting). Cypress seeds are used to redirect the westward-flowing qi, allowing it to circulate and transform into blood. So, how do cypress leaves enter the blood? Their orderly arrangement, neither overly connected nor chaotic, ensures they always point toward the lungs, aligning with the meridians. What flows through the meridians is blood. Thus, cypress leaves treat blood vessels by harmonizing their intent and form. Notably, cypress trees bloom in March and bear fruit in August, which is worth deeper contemplation. Flowers represent the exuberant outward expression of wood's vitality, while seeds embody the inward condensation of qi. August, when metal qi is strong, allows the already flourishing wood qi to unite and form seeds. Thus, cypress seeds are used when wood and metal fail to harmonize. Their moist nature, resulting from the union of wood and metal, benefits blood. When the root of blood is regulated, qi flows smoothly, and the five zang-organs achieve harmony. Conditions like fright disorders stem from the liver, where blood fails to return. Wind and dampness affecting the skin, muscles, and bones indicate imbalanced qi movement in the blood vessels. When qi movement is balanced, pathogens in the yin are expelled to the yang, and those in the yang are expelled to the surface. With the aid of other wind-dampness remedies, how can they not dissipate?

*Bencao Xinbian*: Platycladi Seed is sweet, pungent, and neutral in nature, non-toxic. It enters the heart, liver, kidney, and bladder meridians. It sharpens hearing and vision, relieves migratory impediment, alleviates pain, tonifies qi and blood, dispels mental confusion and deficiency, and stops sweating. It treats kidney cold, lumbar cold, and bladder cold. It is particularly effective in moistening dryness, addressing dryness in the waist, kidneys, body, and face. It enhances yang, kills parasites, calms fright, and stabilizes the five zang-organs. It relieves head wind, dizziness, and pain. It can also be decocted and taken long-term without causing hunger, promoting longevity and anti-aging. This herb is excellent, a marvelous substance for extending life. However, its oil must be removed before use, as excessive oiliness may loosen the bowels. It is especially effective when combined with heart- and kidney-tonifying herbs, enhancing its efficacy.

Cypress leaves are bitter and astringent, primarily astringing the lungs and stopping hematemesis and nosebleeds. They also promote hair growth. However, they are not key yang-tonifying herbs and should not be equated with Platycladi Seed.

Some doubt that Platycladi Seed benefits the heart but not the kidneys, as it must be de-oiled, making it drying. The heart prefers dryness, while the kidneys dislike it. Is this not clear evidence? Alas, such reasoning about herbs is overly rigid. Platycladi Seed is rich in oil; removing it prevents excessive slipperiness that might loosen the bowels, not to make it drying for the heart. Moreover, not all oil is removed, so the kidneys are not overly dried. All herbs should be prepared to achieve balance; why single out Platycladi Seed for doubt?

Some question why Platycladi Seed, a heart-tonifying herb, is used to tonify kidney fire. The heart and kidneys are interconnected. When the heart is deficient, the fire of the life gate cannot remain closed, causing restlessness. Platycladi Seed calms the heart, stabilizing it so that ministerial fire follows orders diligently, preventing leakage. Thus, tonifying the heart is more effective than tonifying the kidneys. While most focus on tonifying the kidneys to enhance yang, few realize that tonifying the heart is even more miraculous.

*Bencao Fenjing*: Pungent and sweet, neutral in nature. Fragrant and moistening. It penetrates the heart and spleen, nourishes the liver and kidneys, enriches blood, stops sweating, and dispels wind-dampness. Among spleen-tonifying herbs, it is uniquely non-drying.

Bencao Sibianlu: Cypress is the leader of all trees, its leaves uniquely point westward, signifying the union of metal and wood. Its benevolence is reflected in its yellow-white color, pungent-sweet taste, and clear fragrance. It is oily yet dry, moist but not greasy. Therefore, the liver benefits from it as it can dispel wind deficiency, the spleen benefits as it can alleviate fixed arthralgia, and the lungs benefit as it can resolve large intestine deficiency. Adding cypress seeds to Bamboo Skin Bolus for asthma is because lung disease is also liver disease. The vexation and vomiting in women's breasts are due to the rebellion of liver qi, which instead of descending to the kidneys, rushes upward to the lungs. Cypress seeds, with their westward-pointing energy, can lower the lungs to calm the liver, thus stopping asthma. This is different from other types of asthma, hence the use of different medicine.

Yixue Zhongzhong Canxilu: The taste is slightly sweet and slightly pungent, the aroma is fragrant and the nature is neutral, containing a lot of oil. It can supplement heart qi, treat heart deficiency and severe palpitations; it can nourish the liver wood, treat liver qi running rampant and hypochondriac pain; it moistens kidney water, treating kidney deficiency and floating heat. Although it contains a lot of oil, its nature is not greasy, and its fragrant aroma and sweet taste can actually benefit the spleen and stomach. Shennong Bencao Jing states that it eliminates wind-dampness obstruction, and the stomach's qi transformation becomes vigorous, spreading from the center to the four directions, thus opening the obstruction. Its taste is sweet and also pungent, and it possesses the descending qi of autumn metal, able to enter the lungs to calm coughs and stabilize asthma, conducting and exercising lung qi downward. In summary, it is a peaceful and pure product that benefits all five zang-organs, hence Shennong Bencao Jing states that it calms the five zang-organs. It is advisable to remove the skin completely, fry it until fragrant, and use it without removing the oil.

Shennong Bencao Jing states that Platycladi Seed can calm the five zang-organs, and it is particularly suitable for the liver. I once treated a young man surnamed Mao from a neighboring village, whose liver had been damaged for a long time, and the pulse at the left guan position was particularly weak. One day, he suddenly experienced pain under the hypochondrium, and I had him take one liang of Platycladi Seed decoction, which cured him immediately. From this, it is evident that Platycladi Seed is adept at regulating the liver.
