Shengji Jing: Slippery conditions lead to qi collapse, astringent formulas are used to consolidate, and the astringency of Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is used to consolidate the slippery condition. Zhang Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses it as the monarch herb. How does an astringent formula unblock the nine orifices?

Leigong states: Use it after removing the pit, take four taels of flesh from one catty, simmer over low heat, it can strengthen original qi and secure essence. The pit can cause spermatorrhea, so it is removed.

The Zhen states: Warms the liver.

Benjing: Stops excessive urination due to its sour taste. Observing its use as the monarch herb in the Eight-Ingredient Pill, its nature and taste can be understood.

Yaoxing Lun: Also states: Tonifies the kidneys and replenishes essence.

Rihuazi also states: Warms the waist and knees, aids the water organs.

Bencao Fahui: Zhang Jiegu states: Sour in taste, yin within yang. Warms the liver.

Bencao Jingshu: Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit senses the spring-born energy of heaven and earth, and also carries the sour taste of wood. Shennong describes its energy as balanced. Bielu mentions it as slightly warm. Overall, it captures the proper energy of spring. Qibo and Zhen Quan add that it is pungent. However, upon tasting, it is clear that its sourness outweighs its pungency. It enters the Foot Jueyin and Foot Shaoyin meridians. Yin within yang, it descends. It treats cold and heat of pathogenic qi below the heart, wind-evil cold and heat in the stomach and intestines, coming and going of head wind and wind qi, stuffy nose, and facial sores, all of which are governed by the liver and kidney meridians. Deficiency heat in these two meridians leads to the aforementioned symptoms. The liver is the seat of wind and wood. The classic texts say: All wind-related trembling and dizziness belong to liver wood. This herb, being warm, can promote circulation; being pungent, it can disperse; and being sour, it can enter the liver and astringe deficiency heat. When wind evils are dispersed, the cold and heat below the heart and in the stomach and intestines are naturally eliminated, the head and eyes become clear, and stuffy nose and facial sores are cured. Expelling cold-dampness bi syndrome, as the classics state: Invasion of pathogens must be due to deficiency of essential qi. It relies on its pungent and warm nature to disperse stagnation, moving and supplementing at the same time. As for the three worms, they are also born from dampness-heat in the stomach and intestines. When dampness is removed, the worms naturally disappear. Warming the middle ensures that qi descends and sweat is released. In the cycle of the four seasons, spring's warmth brings life, while autumn's coolness brings death. The nature of all things prefers warmth and dislikes cold. The essential qi of the human body also relies on the warmth of yang qi to become sufficient. Moreover, the liver and kidneys reside in the lower part, in the position of extreme yin. Without the warmth of qi, solitary yin cannot generate. This herb precisely enters these two meridians, its qi being warm and primarily supplementing, its taste sour and primarily astringing, thus benefiting essential qi and strengthening yin. When essence is enriched, the five zang-organs are naturally at peace, and the nine orifices function smoothly. Additionally, the kidney and bladder are exterior-interiorly related. Bladder deficiency cold leads to incontinence of urine; the ear is the external orifice of the kidney, and kidney deficiency leads to deafness. The liver revitalizes the eyes, and liver deficiency allows pathogenic heat to invade, causing yellowing of the eyes. When these two meridians are attacked by cold evils, it results in hernia and abdominal masses. When these two organs are supplemented, all symptoms are invariably cured.

Contraindications: Avoid in cases of excessive fire at the life gate and persistent strong yang. In cases of bladder heat accumulation and difficulty in urination, the method should be to clear and promote urination. This herb, being sour and astringent, is not suitable. It is also not suitable for yin deficiency with blood heat; if used, it should be combined with Phelloendron Bark.

Bencao Mengquan : The taste is sour and astringent, the nature is neutral and slightly warm. It is non-toxic. It is incompatible with Platycodon Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Stephania Tetrandra. It enters the liver and kidney meridians. Only the flesh is used in pills and powders. It warms the liver and tonifies the kidneys, enhances yang to lengthen the penis; benefits the marrow and stabilizes essence, warms the waist and knees, and aids the water organ. It can regulate menstruation in women and control urination in the elderly. It dispels all wind pathogens and resolves various qi pattern. It opens the nine orifices and eliminates the three worms. It lightens the body and improves vision. The seed should not be used as it can cause spermatorrhea.

Commentary: The classics say: "Slippery leads to qi collapse," Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is used to astringe and collect the slippage. It is used in the Eight-Ingredient Pill to benefit the kidneys and stabilize essence. Benjing states: It can open the nine orifices. However, blindly trusting books is worse than having no books at all!

"Materia Medica Chengya": Sour and warm, it moistens and combines with the essence of the water organ, which cannot be achieved by its own power alone; it must await the right person and time.

The name "Zhu" refers to the wood containing fire, harboring yang within; "Yu" refers to the bending and yielding nature of wood. It blooms in mid-spring and bears fruit in mid-summer, with a red color and sour taste, entering the liver's substance, making it a heart medicine for the liver. When the heart is affected by cold and heat, the fire loses its warming nature; Cornus warms the middle, treating it accordingly. Thus, impediments and worms are removed, and the body is lightened. A guest said: "The liver governs the free flow of qi, so those with urinary retention should use Cornus." Bielu Why does it stop excessive urination? Yi said: This is due to excessive liver function; Cornus tonifies the substance, balancing the function and substance.

"Medicinal Property Explanation": The taste is sweet and sour, slightly warm, non-toxic, enters the liver and kidney meridians. It primarily clears pathogenic qi, expels migratory impediments, breaks accumulations, opens the nine orifices, relieves stuffy nose, treats deafness, kills the three worms, calms the five zang -organs, strengthens primordial yang, stabilizes essence, and promotes urination. It is incompatible with Platycodon Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Stephania Tetrandra.

Note: Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit greatly tonifies essence and blood, thus entering the shaoyin. It is used in the Six-Ingredient Pill to tonify the kidneys without causing heat. If one seeks other hot agents to aid lust, it is like abandoning the virtuous for the wicked, how foolish!

Yaojian : The nature is neutral, slightly warm, the taste is sour and astringent, non-toxic. It is a medicine for the foot jueyin and shaoyin meridians. It warms the gallbladder and tonifies the kidneys, enhancing yang. It stabilizes essence, warms the waist, and aids the water organ. It opens the nine orifices and regulates menstruation. Zhang Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses this as the main ingredient because slippery leads to qi collapse, and astringency collects it, hence this astringent agent is used to collect the slippage. Its ability to stop urination is also due to its kidney-tonifying and essence-adding properties, as the sour taste can collect.

Jingyue Quanshu : The taste is sour and astringent, primarily astringent, the nature is neutral and slightly warm, yin within yang. It enters the liver and kidney organs. It can stabilize yin, tonify essence, warm the waist and knees, strengthen yin qi, astringe discharges, control urination, benefit the marrow, enhance yang, regulate menstruation, and collect blood. If spleen qi is very weak and sensitive to sourness, it should be temporarily stopped, or combined with Liquorice Root and fried ginger.

Bencao Beiyao : Tonifies the liver and kidneys, astringes essential qi.

Pungent, warm, sour, and astringent. Tonifies the kidneys and warms the liver, enters the qi aspect of these two meridians. Stabilizes essence and secures qi, strengthens yin and aids yang, calms the five zang -organs, opens the nine orifices. "Shengji" says: How can an astringent formula open the nine orifices? "Jingshu" says: When essential qi is full, the nine orifices are open and smooth. Ang's note: The ability of Cornus to open the nine orifices has been doubted throughout history, but with "Jingshu's" explanation, the meaning becomes clear. It is a testament to the profound insight of the ancients, which is often hard to comprehend. Expanding on "Jingshu's" statement can truly enlighten medical practitioners. It warms the waist and knees, reduces urination. Treats wind-cold-dampness impediment, warms the liver to expel wind. Relieves stuffy nose and yellow eyes, liver deficiency Xieke causes yellow eyes. Tinnitus and deafness. Kidney deficiency causes tinnitus and deafness, all due to the function of relieving stuffy orifices. Wang Hao-gu said: Slippery leads to qi collapse, astringent formulas collect it, Zhang Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses it as the main ingredient, its nature and taste are thus known. Ang's note: Bielu Zhen Quan, both say it can induce sweating, which is likely a mistake, as sour agents are astringent, how can they induce sweating? How could Zhang Zhongjing use a sweating agent as the main ingredient? Li Shi-cai said: Sour belongs to the east, but its effects are mostly in the north, as Yi (liver) and Gui (kidney) share the same source. The liver is the yi wood, the kidney is the gui water. Remove the seed before use. The seed can cause spermatorrhea. It is incompatible with Platycodon Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Stephania Tetrandra.

Benjing Fengyuan: Slippery leads to qi collapse, astringent to consolidate it, Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit stops excessive urination, secures essential qi, using its sour and astringent properties to consolidate the slippery. Zhen Quan treats brain and bone pain, cures tinnitus, supplements kidney qi, enhances yang function, strengthens the penis, adds to the essence, stops elderly incontinence, treats facial sores, can induce sweating, stops irregular menstruation. Detailed that it can induce sweating, likely a mistake for can astringe sweating, as its sour and astringent nature does not support dispersion. Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses it, benefiting kidney qi, ensuring proper storage, nourishing liver yin, ensuring smooth discharge, Yi (liver) and Gui (kidney) share the same source. Life gate fire flourishing, red turbidity and painful urination, and difficulty in urination are contraindicated.

Bencao Chongyuan: Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is purple-red in color and has a sour and neutral taste, embodying the qi transformation of Jueyin and Shaoyang wood-fire. The hand Jueyin pertains to the pericardium, hence it treats heart purgation pathogenic qi, cold and heat. The area below the heart is the region of the Jueyin pericardium. The hand Shaoyang pertains to the triple energizer, hence it warms the middle. The middle refers to the middle energizer. The middle energizer extracts juice, which is transformed into red by the heart to become blood. Blood is born from the heart and stored in the liver. The foot Jueyin liver governs the blood, which nourishes the skin and warms the flesh, hence it expels cold-dampness impediment throughout the body. When the wood-fire qi is abundant, the triple energizer becomes unobstructed, hence it eliminates the three worms.

Note: Zhang Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit. Later generations removed cinnamon and aconite, changing it to the Six-Ingredient Pill, using Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit as a medicine to consolidate essence and tonify the kidneys. Apart from this, it has no other uses. This is due to complacency and lack of in-depth exploration. Now, upon detailed examination of Benjing, the functions and indications of Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit are as such. Scholars who can comprehend within Benjing and broaden its uses will avoid the pitfalls of narrow-mindedness.

Bencao Qiuzhen: [Comment] Warming and tonifying the liver and kidneys, astringing essence and consolidating qi.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit specifically enters the liver and kidneys. It has a sour taste, warm nature, and astringent properties. Some texts mention its ability to reduce urination and secure essential qi, as its sour taste governs contraction. Its astringent nature consolidates and prevents leakage. With this, essence and qi do not slip away. It is also said to warm the waist and knees and treat wind-cold-dampness impediment. Liver deficiency allows wind to enter, and liver cold makes it susceptible to cold and dampness. Stuffy nose and yellow eyes are due to liver deficiency Xieke causing yellow eyes. Its warm nature can tonify, hence it enters the qi aspect of the liver and kidney meridians. Feng Zhaozhang said: Warm and tonifying formulas benefit primordial yang. Hence, the order of the four seasons is spring growth and autumn decline. The nature of all things prefers warmth and dislikes cold. The liver and kidneys reside in the utmost yin regions; without the qi of yang harmony, how can yin be born? Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit enters these two meridians, its warm nature tonifies, and its sour taste astringes, hence essential qi is benefited and the waist and knees are strengthened. Moreover, astringency inherently governs contraction and closure. Some texts mention its ability to open the nine orifices and treat tinnitus and deafness, which is also due to sufficient essential qi naturally benefiting the nine orifices. How can it be astringent yet unobstructed? Haogu said: Slippery leads to qi collapse, astringent formulas are used to contract it. Zhang Zhongjing's Eight-Ingredient Pill uses it as the sovereign, indicating its nature. Xiuan notes Bielu and Zhen Quan both mention its ability to induce sweating, likely due to sufficient essential qi expelling pathogens from the exterior, not erroneous text, but it confuses later generations.

Depei Bencao: Water pepper is its envoy. It is incompatible with Platycodon Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Stephania Tetrandra.

Sour, warm. Enters the foot Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians' blood aspect. Contracts Shaoyang fire, nourishes Jueyin fluid, tonifies the kidneys, warms the liver, consolidates essence, secures qi. Warms the waist and knees, reduces urination, astringes internal wind, contracts yin sweat, eliminates facial sores, stops seminal leakage.

Exuberant life gate fire, taking it assists fire and seminal leakage. Yin deficiency with blood heat, strong liver and weak spleen, wood overacting on earth causing diarrhea. Difficult urination, these four are contraindicated.

Bencao Jing Jie: Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit has a neutral qi, embodying the metal qi of autumn completion, enters the hand Taiyin lung meridian; sour taste and non-toxic, obtains the wood qi of the east, enters the foot Jueyin liver meridian. Both qi and taste are descending, yin in nature.

Below the heart is the spleen's region, the liver's pathogenic qi, the liver wood's pathogenic qi. Liver wood with insufficient blood and excessive qi overacts on the spleen earth, combining with yang causes heat, combining with yin causes cold. Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit's sour taste enters the liver, benefits liver blood and contracts liver qi, hence purging cold and heat is naturally eliminated.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit's sour taste contracts, contracting fire to return to the lower energizer. Fire below is called lesser fire, lesser fire generates qi, hence warming the middle.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit's neutral qi benefits the lungs, the lungs govern the skin and body hair and regulate water passages. When water passages are regulated, the skin and hair are well-arranged, and cold-dampness impediment is cured. The three worms are transformed from dampness-heat. When dampness-heat descends through water passages, the worms are also expelled.

Shennong Bencao Jingdu: Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is purple-red in color and has a sour and neutral taste, embodying the qi of Jueyin and Shaoyang wood-fire. The hand Jueyin pericardium and foot Jueyin liver both pertain to wind-wood; the hand Shaoyang triple energizer and foot Shaoyang gallbladder both pertain to ministerial fire.

The area below the heart, the Juque point, is the alarm point of the hand Jueyin pericardium. Also, below the heart is the spleen's region. Pathogenic qi refers to the spleen's pathogenic qi, which is actually the liver wood's pathogenic qi. Foot Jueyin liver wood with insufficient blood and excessive qi overacts on the spleen earth, combining with yang causes heat, combining with yin causes cold. Also, alternating cold and heat pertains to Shaoyang. Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit embodies the qi transformation of wood-fire, hence it treats all these.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit's sour taste contracts, contracting fire to return to the lower energizer. Fire below is called lesser qi, lesser fire generates qi, hence warming the middle.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit's sour taste enters the liver. The liver governs blood storage, blood nourishes the skin and warms the flesh, hence it expels cold-dampness impediment throughout the body.

The three worms are the transformation of the Jueyin wind-wood. The sourness of Zhongjing's Mume Pill can treat gallbladder ascariasis, which was inspired by this substance.

Benjing Shuzheng: Evodia Fruit blooms but does not bear fruit at that time, while Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit bears fruit but does not flourish, exhibiting a wandering and unrestrained demeanor. Therefore, it is particularly effective in treating diseases located in the middle and upper regions, especially below the heart. The fruit that matures in autumn has a harsh and intense nature, hence it is pungent and potent. The fruit that matures in spring has a mild and harmonious nature, hence it is sour and moist, and warm. Because it is sour, moist, and warm, its energy is deep and stable, and its strength is gentle. Otherwise, if there is pathogenic qi of cold and heat below the heart, and cold-dampness causing obstruction externally, it would be like the heavens purging, leading to internal and external disturbances. How then can warming the middle resolve it? To resolve internal and external disturbances by warming the middle, one must possess the wisdom of dredging, the duty of stabilizing, the talent of skillful execution, and the governance of benevolence. Therefore, Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit treats pathogenic qi of cold and heat below the heart and expels cold-dampness obstruction. With its unimpeded wandering nature in the middle earth, it enters and occupies the middle, then exerts its spring-like and expansive command, allowing it to be expelled externally through sweat or internally through the intestines and stomach. Once the middle is cleared, how can the external obstructions remain unmoved? Thus, it is understood that the so-called pathogenic qi of cold and heat and cold-dampness obstruction must be due to the liver's deficiency and loss of its dredging function, leading to the earth's barrenness and inability to transport evil, and the muscles being affected by cold-dampness and becoming obstructed. This is the essence of Benjing, which discusses the causes within. As for Bielu, it also mentions yin deficiency with fire floating above and yang weakness with water escaping below. Yin's duty is to be still, and yang's function is to be dense. Therefore, Shengqi Tongtian Lun says: Yin stores essence and rises urgently. If fire alone is above, then head wind, wind qi coming and going, stuffy nose, yellow eyes, deafness, and dark face occur. If yang does not protect the exterior, then there is frequent urination and sweating. Only by obtaining warm and moist substances to stabilize the middle, and using sour flavors to attract and collect, can the floating above return and the escaping below be secured. Once returned and secured, the qi naturally accumulates within, and yin cannot but strengthen, and essence cannot but solidify. With yin strengthened and essence solidified, how can the five zang-organs not be at peace? How can the nine orifices not open and close properly? In summary, the strength of Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit lies in bearing fruit in spring and being imbued with the qi of summer, autumn, and winter. It neither spits nor swallows, always maintaining its sour and warm flavor, and always spreading its nurturing and clear essence. In yin, it can harmonize yin without yang overstepping; in yang, it can secure yang without yin being depleted. The efficacy of Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is fully expressed here. Some say that Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit is harvested in May, as stated by Binhu, and should not be rigidly adhered to the ancient Bielu. From Bielu, Qianjin Yi, Waitai Miyao to Tujing, all say it is harvested in September and October, only Tujing mentions a different view of harvesting in May, which is slightly different and clearly presents another theory, not to be taken as definitive. Wang Mojie's poem on Cornus officinalis says: "Red fruits open below the mountain, their fragrance becomes stronger in the cold, fortunate to be with sweet osmanthus flowers, facing the autumn moon by the window." How then can the theory of harvesting in May be justified?

Bencao Fenjing: Sour, astringent, slightly warm. It secures essence, consolidates qi, tonifies the kidney, warms the liver, strengthens yin, assists yang, and opens the nine orifices, also capable of inducing sweating.

Bencao Sibianlu: Nowadays, people use Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit only for its ability to strengthen yin and benefit essence, which is not incorrect. However, the tree grows over ten feet tall, blooms in February, and bears fruit as soon as winter arrives, fully embodying the qi of Jueyin wood. The fruit is sour and warm, sufficient to warm the liver, dispel wind, and open the orifices, hence it also treats stuffy nose, deafness, yellow eyes, and facial sores. As for the text on treating pathogenic qi of cold and heat below the heart and inducing sweating, some doubt its capability. However, its purple-red color indicates it also enters the pericardium, and with its wind-wood dredging nature, sweat being the fluid of the heart, how can it not induce profuse sweating? Sweating then expels the evil of cold and heat. All these should be studied in detail beyond its tonifying effects. Thus, its use in Kidney Qi Pill is not merely for strengthening yin and benefiting essence.

Yixue Zhongzhong Canxilu: Cornus officinalis: Sour in taste, warm in nature. Greatly capable of consolidating original qi, invigorating the spirit, and securing slippery desertion. Because it receives the thickest wood qi, its astringent nature also includes a smooth and free-flowing quality, hence it opens the nine orifices, promotes blood circulation, treats liver deficiency spontaneous sweating, liver deficiency flank pain and back pain, liver deficiency internal wind stirring, and consolidates healthy qi without consolidating pathogenic qi, differing from other astringent herbs. Therefore, Shennong Bencao Jing says it expels cold-dampness obstruction. The kernel and flesh have antagonistic properties, so the kernel must be thoroughly removed when used. Recently, medical reports mention that the kernel is astringent and also consolidating, often causing difficulty in urination. Crushing and tasting it indeed reveals an astringent flavor, so this theory may be credible.

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit, endowed with the robust energy of wood, possesses a strong opening and unblocking power within its sour and astringent nature, as the wood element thrives on free flow and expansion. Shennong Bencao Jing states that it primarily treats cold-dampness impediment. Various materia medica texts often mention its ability to clear and benefit the nine orifices. Its nature not only nourishes the liver but also facilitates the smooth flow of qi and blood. To merely regard it as an astringent substance is to underestimate the Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit.
