This method is a simple diagnostic and therapeutic technique invented by the author after suffering from a severe eye disease. It can be performed using just one's own fingers. Please refer to Figure 1 for the steps.

The principle lies in the fact that when the eyes are overused, excessive metabolic waste is produced, and the body is deficient in clearing it, leading to accumulation in the tissues around the eyes. Over time, this not only depletes the essence and blood that nourish the eyes, but the accumulated metabolic waste also obstructs the input of nutrients and the output of waste, resulting in poor qi and blood circulation around the eye sockets, loss of tissue elasticity, and tenderness.

When used for diagnosis, each area only needs to be scraped once or twice, mainly to test the degree of qi and blood circulation around the eye sockets. When a firm knuckle is scraped across the face, a normal person will not feel much pain and will perceive the facial tissues (especially tendons and muscles) as soft and elastic. The worse the qi and blood circulation around the eyes and the more metabolic waste accumulates, the greater the pain, and the coarser and harder the tendons and muscles become . The severity can be inferred from the subject's facial expressions: from the mildest frown, to moderate teeth clenching, to the most severe pushing away of the practitioner's arm + anger, roughly divided into 3 levels.

When used for treatment, the main goal is to improve the qi and blood circulation around the eyes. The technique is the same, but each area must be scraped back and forth more than a dozen times, and every small area must be covered. If the pain is too intense for the person to perform on themselves, someone else can do it, taking care to avoid the patient's eyeballs and using the maximum force the patient can tolerate. A small amount of lubricant can be applied to reduce skin friction pain.

Figure 1: Illustration of Periorbital Finger Scraping Technique
  1. Make a fist, protruding the knuckle of the index finger
  2. Press the knuckle against the forehead above the eyebrow, avoiding the eyeball, and scrape back and forth with the maximum tolerable force
  3. Press below the eye socket and repeat the action of (b)
  4. Press around the great yang acupoint and repeat the action of (b)
