bubble_chart Content "Rise" (升) refers to the spleen qi being primarily ascending and upward, while "Clear" (清) means "clearing qi aspect," which is the nutrients and water obtained after digestion and absorption by the stomach and intestines. "Rise of the Clear" (升清) is the process of transporting these nutrients and water upwards to the heart and lungs, making a 180° turn at the aortic arch before descending to be distributed throughout the body. The spleen represents the earth, and the heart and lungs represent the heavens. Earth qi ascends, while heaven qi descends (the aortic arch turns 180° downward), which aligns with the "Tai" (泰) hexagram in Book of Changes, where "Kun" (坤, earth) is above "Qian" (乾, heaven), symbolizing the interaction between heaven and earth, giving rise to vitality. Conversely, the "Pi" (否) hexagram has "Qian" above "Kun," indicating that the qi of heaven and earth do not interact, leading to stagnation and lack of vitality (Refers to The Hexagram of the Human Body).
If spleen qi deficiency damages the insufficient, digestion weakens, and in severe cases of spleen and stomach qi and blood deficiency, one may observe the phenomenon of "Sinking of Middle Qi." In such cases, the ligaments of the organs in the abdominal and pelvic cavities become lax and weak, causing the stomach, intestines, or uterus to prolapse, pressing down on the bladder and leading to frequent urination. The treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine, currently beyond the imagination of modern medicine, is known as "tonifying middle and replenishing qi" or "boosting middle qi." This not only improves the digestive and absorptive functions of the spleen and stomach but also restores the tension of the ligaments in the abdominal cavity, alleviating visceral prolapse.
