Madam L and Master Z lived a life of great wealth, but after many years of marriage, they had no children. They drew many lots at the temple, all saying they would have no offspring in this life, except for one lot from a Guanyin temple that said they must generously help the poor and destitute to have a chance.

'She' dragged on like this, past the marriageable age, still single. 'She' didn't mind, spending her days reading novels, playing the zither, dabbling in calligraphy and painting, making desserts, brewing and tasting tea, and growing flowers for amusement, living a comfortable and happy life. Her parents, who doted on this only precious daughter, let 'her' continue like this.
